The Practice of Using Cellulose


Human beings usually think of food in chemical terms. Protein, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, minerals. Nutrition is described as a transfer of molecules from the outside world into the body.

Yet inside the body another story is unfolding. The human intestine contains trillions of microorganisms — bacteria, archaea, fungi, and others — forming what is now widely called the microbiome or biome. This community carries out fermentation, produces metabolites, and participates in many physiological processes.

But like any community, it depends on its environment.

The intestine is not simply a chemical reactor; it is also a physical space. Its internal condition — whether empty, compressed, hydrated, or structured — determines how organisms move, attach, multiply, and perform their work. In that environment, cellulose has a unique character.

Cellulose is the structural material of plants. It forms the walls of plant cells and the fibers of stems and leaves. Humans cannot digest it enzymatically. For that reason, modern dietary thinking often treats cellulose as inert residue.

From another point of view, however, cellulose may be understood as a structural companion to the biome.

When present in the intestine, cellulose creates volume and mechanical resistance. It absorbs water, maintains form, and prevents the intestinal chamber from collapsing into an empty tube. One might imagine it the way air pressure maintains the shape of a bicycle tire: not a nutrient, but a condition that allows the system to function properly.

The approach described in this book treats cellulose as an intentional component of daily living. This includes:

• Selecting plant materials rich in natural structure
• Preparing them mechanically — cutting, slicing, or grating — rather than pulverizing them into powders
• Allowing the intestine to remain physically occupied rather than empty
• Incorporating periods of fasting that allow the body to reset metabolic activity while the biome continues its work
• Respecting the natural cycle of ingestion and elimination

In this framework, digestion is not a short event that occurs after a meal but a multi-day cycle. Materials enter the digestive system, fermentation proceeds gradually, and elimination follows in an orderly progression.

The human body thus becomes part of a larger collaboration between plant structures, microorganisms, and conscious human behavior.

The essays that follow explore this idea from many directions. Some chapters are practical, describing methods of preparing cellulose and observing digestive cycles. Others reflect on broader themes: the connection between body and mind, the influence of the brain and nervous system, the discipline of yoga, and the philosophical question of how humans should live with the living systems inside them.

To care for the human organism, one must also care for the biome.

And to care for the biome, one must learn to respect the quiet structural material that plants have been producing on Earth for hundreds of millions of years — cellulose.
